If Only Henry Brown Had a Computer Game…

I couldn’t resist this curious bit of news. A friend recently sent me an article about a man who is shipping himself in a box from Bald Knob, Arkansas, to Portland, Oregon, beginning July 7. That’s right: A seven-day trip covering over 2,100 miles.

However, the stunt has nothing to do with the true story of Henry “Box” Brown, the slave who mailed himself to freedom in 1849. This present-day shipment is being done as performance art, and for all I know the man in the box–Jordan Wayne Long–may not have ever heard of Henry Brown. Also, did I mention that Long is planning to stay in contact with the outside world through Lord of the Rings Online, a massive multiplayer online game? In other words, he’ll be living in a virtual world for a week, while battery packs will keep his computer charged the entire time.

One other thing. He’ll have more space and many more comforts than Henry did, of course. Most importantly, Long’s box is outfitted to handle bathroom needs. Don’t ask me how. I don’t want to know.
