Few people probably remember the sinking of the iron-hulled Union ship, USS Hatteras, off the coast of Galveston, Texas, during the Civil War. But the ship played a key role in the struggle over the port of Galveston. The USS Hatteras was sunk by the Confederate ship, CSS Alabama, on January 11, 1863. Scientists recently announced that they have just begun using sonar to create a 3D map of the wreck, which is partially covered in silt and sand 57 feet deep in the Gulf of Mexico.
